Dr Roopa Khare

What life experiences or personal insights inspired you to pursue a career in counselling psychology?

My professional journey began in a very different field. I graduated in Mathematics and Computer Science and later completed an MBA (2005). Being simple yet hardworking, I secured my first job with Reliance Infocom in the Value-Added People – Broadband Section. Later, I joined a software firm, JD IT Infotech in Faridabad. Although my peers and supervisors appreciated my performance and wanted me to continue, I gradually realized that the work did not bring me personal fulfilment. (continue reading..)

Successful Counselling Sessions

Deep inside, I knew I wanted to work for people and with people — to understand human minds and lives more closely. In search of this connection, I moved to the Human Resource (HR) field, hoping to find meaning there. However, that too failed to satisfy the deeper purpose I was looking for.

Life then unfolded its own plan. My experiences across academics and industry, combined with the pause that came through my maternity leaves, gave me more time to connect with women, students, and people around me. Many of them would open to me about their challenges and often said, “You speak like a psychologist.” They thanked me for guiding them with care and understanding — insights that came naturally from my ability to analyze situations and personalities in just a few conversations.

Their faith in me became the turning point. Encouraged by their trust, I decided to formalize what I was already doing from the heart. Having experienced my own emotional struggles and the stigma around seeking help, I pursued a Ph.D. on “Emotional Stability” — one of the Big Five personality traits I had personally grappled with — and later completed my M.A. in Guidance and Counselling (2013).

Initially unsure about starting professional practice, I was motivated by Dr. Gaurav Singh, M.D. Psychiatry, my internship supervisor at the hospital, whose confidence in my abilities strengthened my own. With a solid grounding in psychological principles, clinical techniques, and the unwavering support of my husband and family, I took the courageous step of opening my own counselling clinic. To my surprise and gratitude, I began seeing clients right from the very first week.

Having personally experienced the pain of emotional turmoil and the absence of timely professional help, I hold this profession with deep seriousness, empathy, and respect. My work today is driven by a solution-focused and compassionate approach, helping individuals restore their emotional balance, resilience, and confidence — just as I once worked to restore my own.

Were there any pivotal moments or challenges that shaped your therapeutic philosophy?

I studied the Person-Centered Approach and over time, I have come to naturally sense and differentiate the unique personality patterns of individuals — understanding how each one may find relief and growth in a way that feels authentic and meaningful to them at their current stage of life.

In my early journey, I walked through deep personal struggles — facing painful weeps, inner screams, and even moments of suicidal ideation — yet these experiences became the foundation of my empathy and insight. I listened to countless therapists, speakers, psychologists, and philosophers, often feeling foolish for expecting them to change my life. But that very feeling of foolishness became the seed of transformation: it pushed me to create simple, self-applicable, and truthful solutions that even an ordinary person could understand and use for healing, As I realized, people here have very different cultures, backgrounds, and environments.

Over the past 7–8 years of my practice, many clients have affirmed that these tailored approaches have helped them not only understand their pain but also the deeper reasons behind the difficult people and situations in their lives.

For me, the inner fire that always said, “I cannot tolerate Roopa being defeated by anyone or any situation,” became both my shield and my sword — one that protected my mind while teaching me resilience. My faith and my theistic belief gave this journey a direction that turned pain into purpose, and purpose into a path for helping others.

How does your counselling practice differ from conventional or mainstream psychological approaches?

Most psychological approaches were originally defined and practiced within non-Indian cultural setups, particularly in countries like the USA and others. In India, however, we live within immense cultural diversity — not only across states, but also among communities, professions, genders, businesses, castes, and creeds even many more. Therefore, a counsellor, one must remain aware of these diversities and respect them at least to the extent necessary to understand and effectively guide our clients.

While studying renowned theories, questionnaires, and psychological inventories, I often found them irrelevant for a large section of our population — people who may not even know Hindi, let alone English, and who express themselves best in their local language. Moreover, many of these tools are designed for clinical settings, whereas much of our country’s emotional and relational suffering occurs in non-clinical contexts.

For me, counselling begins with asking the right questions — those that truly build rapport and help uncover the underlying experiences, thoughts, and meanings behind a person’s struggle. This requires not only theoretical understanding but also experience, cognitive insight, and a genuine passion for human development.

In my work, I aim to offer not just a safe and non-judgmental space, but also an environment where individuals can be their authentic selves — even in the parts they perceive as “odd.” I help them see that what feels odd or unacceptable is often a hidden, universal aspect of human nature — something even the greatest among us have shared.

I have also discovered that deep, complete listening is one of the most powerful tools of healing. Though practical constraints like time and financial limits can make it difficult, I try to listen as fully as possible — recognizing each person as a whole being, shaped by the many roots and experiences that have made them who they are.

Do you integrate any unique frameworks, cultural perspectives, or alternative modalities in your sessions?

Yes, I usually explore environmental factors in depth, as well as a person’s childhood history. It is important to understand who they were between the ages of 3 to 10 years. I also incorporate yoga and breathing practices, and, whenever possible, meditation and guided imagery. In addition, I provide homeopathic medicines after proper diagnosis, which often work wonderfully.

What types of psychological or emotional challenges have you treated with consistently positive outcomes?

I provide solutions and counselling support to couples and women experiencing family-related issues — such as challenges with partners, conflicts with in-laws, or situations where couples are on the verge of divorce. I believe a couple forms the most important foundation of society — for their children, for themselves, and for the people around them.

Do you advocate or collaborate with any medical systems such as allopathic psychiatry? If not, what are your reasons?

I might usually try to avoid this question, but I will speak on it. All my respected psychiatrists, (please do not feel offended) are aware of the cases where counselling is needed, yet many tend to focus on convincing their patients that everything will be fine and that medicines alone will resolve issues such as anger, sleeplessness, anxiety, or depression. Or just use psychological scientific intelligence inventor like WASE (watcher’s assessment for social) Inventory, emotional, quotient social quotient test only They know the facts well but rarely encourage patients to address these underlying aspects first.

I would greatly appreciate a collaborative approach in which patients first share their full experiences and challenges, and counselling is considered before or alongside medication. I understand this may sound like prioritizing psychologists over psychiatrists, but believe me, it is often the most effective path.

I have met many patients who wished to reduce or stop their medications but could hardly do so. Only after years of taking medicines without real relief do they come to counselling in a depleted state. If such a collaborative approach had been available earlier — before the age of 40 or 60 even 30s— I could have helped them regain balance much sooner.

Have you found homeopathic remedies helpful in addressing mental health symptoms? Could you share any examples or insights from your practice?

Definitely — it would be a great help. I must emphasize that psychiatry is essential in chronic cases such as long-standing OCD, severe depression, or psychosis and other serious conditions. Personally, I feel that medication should not be the first line of treatment in neurosis cases. (To clarify: psychosis involves a loss of contact with reality, while neurosis does not. Someone with neurosis suffers from emotional distress — such as anxiety or depression — but remains grounded.)
